Today marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. It was established on April 22, 1970 to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.
Did you know that, by the year 2015, it is estimated that we will spend $121.7 Billion dollars to refurbish our homes with new furniture? And as we do, we will throw away used furniture and packaging from those new purchases contributing over 10 Million TONS of waste into our landfills annually. Obviously, the importance of environmentally conscious choices, which includes interior decoration, takes on an even greater urgency given these staggering statistics.
I'd like to thank each of you in the redesign and interior decorating industries for playing a key role to minimize the impact on our environment by reusing, repurposing and restyling existing decor to the extent possible. Whether you realized it or not, the "new-to-them" look not only made the most of what your clients already owned, but helped protect our planet as well.
So Happy Earth Day 2010! I think we can all take a small measure of pride in our achievements and I look forward to even more opportunities to be environmental stewards in the future.
