"Business Planning Your Way to Success"

This will be a hands-on working Session facilitated by Kristine Porter of KP Business Momentum.

Kris will share her amazing example of entrepreneurial vision and leadership as she helps

guide each member through realistic goal setting and businesses planning for 2012.

This session will serve as the foundation for our Year of Accountability and all future meetings

will build on this crucial piece of the puzzle. Also, Power Partner Teams will be assigned at this meeting.

It is imperative that you attend this kickoff meeting if you want to participate in the Accountability Program for the year.

In Mary's words describing the project:

"Like many people, these folks had changed the identity of a room to suit their lifestyle. They had decided that the dining room would make a good play room for their children. Well this is all well and good until it came time to market the property. Keep in mind, this was a “first impression room”. Buyers would be expecting to see a Living room on one side of the foyer and a Dining room on the other. So this is what we gave them!"

"We started by bringing in the same paint color (from the Living room) to give a cohesive feel from the foyer. We utilized existing furniture to keep the budget down. We brought in a new mirror, table ware and a $12 center piece thrift store find (score!). We anchored the table with an inexpensive, updated, light fixture and the rest is history!"

GCDC “DECORATING STAR” 2011

CONTEST

The GCDC is proud to announce our first-ever decorating competition, GCDC Decorating Star 2011, exclusively for our Members. The entrepreneur chosen as winner of GCDC Decorating Star 2011 will receive a Certificate and Trophy in honor of this accomplishment. The winner will also be prominently featured on the GCDC website and Facebook page.

The contest is open to ALL paid Members in good standing. Entries will be accepted from July 15^th til Aug. 15^th, 2011. All such entries become the property of the Greater Chicagoland Decorators Coalition and may be used as deemed appropriate by GCDC Administration for publicity purposes. The following contest rules will apply:

· At least two (2) BEFORE and two (2) AFTER photos of a project you personally have completed for a client. Photos must be submitted in digital format to thegcdc@yahoo.com. A brief paragraph must accompany the photographs explaining the project’s purpose, goal and outcome and how it was achieved.

· Each set of photos will preferably show the space from a different perspective to better appreciate the scope and quality of the project.

· Entries may include projects featuring interior redesign, interior decorating, interior design, real estate staging and/or other decorating specialties.

· Each entry email must include the name, business name, address and phone number of entrant along with entry photos. Also please indicate which discipline your project best represents (i.e. redesign, staging, design/decorating or other).
Incomplete entries including those without a descriptive paragraph will not be considered.

· Entries will be judged based on the extent to which they exemplify excellence in a particular discipline with a focus on universal decorating/design principals and fundamentals. The overall esthetic of the finished project will also be considered.

· A panel of three (3) judges including the GCDC Administrators will select the winner. The judge’s decision shall be final.

ARTIFACTURAL FURNISHINGS HOSTS GCDC

GCDC Members met today with Amy & Bob Brinkman of Artifactural Furnishings in Barrington, IL. The meeting included a tour of their showroom featuring beautiful and unique custom woodwork from reclaimed lumber and other salvaged goods.

We were also treated to additional presentations by Rob Curtis of Fortifi Home Technologies and Jim Starr from Surface Group International.

Fortifi Home Tech. specializes in the latest in- home automation and technology. While Surface Group provides high-end residential solutions for floors, walls, counter tops and more. Thank you to our vendor host and guests for a very informative meeting.

GCDC JOINS IFDA FOR BUSINESS BOOT CAMP

GCDC Members joined our counterparts at IFDA for a Business Building Symposium
at C.A.I Designs in Arlington Heights, IL on May 24th.
In addition to touring the beautiful showrooms at Arlington Design Center, attendees were treated to three engaging and informative speakers including The Guilt Free Coach Victoria Cook, motivational speaker and image coach Catherine Johns and keynote speaker Joyce Romanoff of Maya Romanoff Extraordinary Surfacing Materials. Maya himself made a rare guest appearance.

GCDC Members Tour New Design d'Vision Showrooms

The members of GCDC were some of the first to have the pleasure of touring the new Design d'Vision showrooms in Arlington Heights. Now both showrooms are housed under one roof at the Arlington Design Center. Sue, owner of Design d'Vision shared with our members the fabulous assortment of vendors and products that are available to designers.

The new showroom, will now house furniture collections including the introduction of The Lillian August Collection from Hickory White, accessories, wallpaper and fabric (Anna French,Browning & Chandler, Eden Hall, Romo, Schumacher,Thibaut and Telefina).

The existing showroom in the building is now the Drapery Resource center featuring our drapery hardware (Finial Co., Paris Texas,etc.) fabric(JF, Maxwell, Norbar, RM Coco, Stout, Tapestria, Wesco ), hard window treatments (Graber and B & W), and trim (with a great self-serve trim area).

Debbie Logan shared in detail how she as well as Design d'Vision are "The Decorators Resource" for all your window treatment needs. Some of the GCDC members have first hand knowledge of the wonderful customer service and helpful resource the folks at Design d'Vision are.

Our members were excited to learn about the many offerings of M&M Events and the Howard Elliott Collection located in Carol Stream. We are proud to announce a limited "partnership" between GCDC and the local chapter of IFDA (International Furnishings & Design Association). We will be helping one another by sharing and promoting educational and motivational opportunities that will benefit our members.

We have agreed to jointly sponsor a couple of meetings in 2011. More information about those meetings will be coming soon. We will also be cross promoting each other's ongoing meeting agendas in case there are opportunities our members might find of mutual interest.

While IFDA is a national organization with local chapters and their meeting structure and costs are different, we still believe there are opportunities to make this a win-win for both groups.

Our Stars in Long Grove

Great event at Mangels in Long Grove last night. Some of the stars in our group got to shine and share their expertisse with us on holiday decorating. Everyone was oohing and ahhhing !!! GCDC Administrator Judy Pelinski, Owner and Master Trainer of The Staging & Redesign Academy, is a decorating industry leader helping gifted students from all over the United States turn their "Passion Into A Profession".
In keeping with SRA's Mission to provide continuing educational opportunities and ongoing mentoring and support for SRA Alumni, Judy is now expanding the Staging & Redesign Academy's curriculum to provide more in-depth training and additional certifications in a variety of decorating specialities.
As part of this expansion, Judy has invited fellow GCDC Administrator and former student, Jeff Rice of Decor Designs, to join SRA as an Associate Trainer. Rice will begin in the fall of 2010.

DECORATORS CONFERENCE A HUGE SUCCESS!!!

WE DID IT! "The Future is Now Conference" is now in the past. But that doesn't diminish all that we shared and learned yesterday. The event was awesome and I think attendees, Judy Pelinski and myself included, are ready to use what we learned to propel our businesses into the Future.

Of course, we couldn't have done it without the support of our amazing attendees, speakers and sponsors including Matt Fox of HGTV's Room By Room. From GCDC members to SRA Alumni, to IFDA attendees and the general public, we managed to fill almost every seat in the house our first time out.

Matt Fox wasn't only a tremendously inspirational and entertaining keynote speaker but a most down-to-earth and gracious guest. He and his wife, Jennifer, even chipped in moving furniture and helping clean up after it was all said and done. We couldn't have asked for a more wonderful personality. Matt, after being barraged with photo ops and book signings all day long, was even quoted as saying, "It's a good thing I'm not famous"! We look forward to seeing his & Shari's new show appearing on PBS this fall.

The article chronicles Debbie's journey to become a home stager after revamping her own new home. Today marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. It was established on April 22, 1970 to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.

Did you know that, by the year 2015, it is estimated that we will spend $121.7 Billion dollars to refurbish our homes with new furniture? And as we do, we will throw away used furniture and packaging from those new purchases contributing over 10 Million TONS of waste into our landfills annually. Obviously, the importance of environmentally conscious choices, which includes interior decoration, takes on an even greater urgency given these staggering statistics.

I'd like to thank each of you in the redesign and interior decorating industries for playing a key role to minimize the impact on our environment by reusing, repurposing and restyling existing decor to the extent possible. Whether you realized it or not, the "new-to-them" look not only made the most of what your clients already owned, but helped protect our planet as well.

So Happy Earth Day 2010! I think we can all take a small measure of pride in our achievements and I look forward to even more opportunities to be environmental stewards in the future.

It's hard to believe another month has passed since our last GCDC outing, but it's true! Last night our illustrious group had our first Saturday evening event with 14 people in attendance, a fabulous number on a weekend evening!!! Members Kathleen Sarrett and Nancy Winchester put together dinner at Wildfire Grill followed by a private event held at the Crate and Barrel Oak Brook. With the store closed, we had the undivided attention and service of Store Manager Beth Pergande as well as decorating staff Jennifer and Jody and designer services professional David. Unless you have spent a lot of time at Crate and Barrel lately I can guarantee that you do not know the extent of the designer advantages as well as products they offer to compliment your design vision from start to finish. Crate and Barrel has always been know for their on-trend style of home accessories and dishware, but what designers and customers may not know is the multitude of furniture, bedding and case-goods options available. "THE FUTURE IS NOW" MICRO-CONFERENCE

The Staging and Redesign Academy (SRA) in cooperation with the Greater Chicagoland Decorators Coalition (GCDC) will be hosting a full-day Conference on June 25^th, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Comfort Suites Hotel, 2480 Bushwood Dr. in Elgin, IL.

The Conference entitled, “The Future is Now”, is being developed and sponsored by the SRA and the GCDC to respond to the demand for educational resources for interior designers, decorators, redesigners and home stagers as well as Do-It-Yourself homeowners in the Chicago area. The event will feature presenters covering a variety of topics from networking trends, the latest in window fashions and exciting, new faux finish techniques and products. “The Guilt Free Coach”, Victoria Cook, will conduct a hands-on workshop to help attendees reset their priorities for exponential success. Both organizations are proud to welcome Keynote Speaker Matt Fox, known to most as “Matt & Shari”, from the HGTV design series “Room by Room”. Mr. Fox is a wonderful addition to a jam-packed day of learning and networking. He will speak at the conference on Friday afternoon.

Jeff Rice, Owner of Décor Designs, Inc. in Crystal Lake, IL and an Executive Member of the GCDC is one of the organizers for the event. Mr. Rice says, “The Conference will help local decorators by providing an opportunity to network, develop and grow their individual businesses while also providing information of value to the average homeowner.”

Space will be limited to the first 50 enrollees. Registration for GCDC Members and SRA Alumni will begin April 1^st,2010 for a fee of $55.00. Decorating professionals from other organizations and the general public will be invited to register beginning May 1^st, 2010 for $75.00. When Opportunity Knocks

Do you sit back waiting for opportunity to knock, or do you open the door, poke your head out looking around to see if you can find opportunity before it even gets to your door? If you're like most people, myself included most of the time, waiting for opportunity to knock is something we have grown accustomed to. The business climate these days though calls for a new approach to our old ways. When was the last time you stepped outside your comfort zone to make a contact, try a new approach to an old system or dare to add something different than your competitors to your business? As solo-preneuers being the pioneers is written into the job description, but often forgotten in the day to day workings of keeping things running smoothly. Even the smallest change may be just what is needed to open the floodgates of opportunity, many times to things you may have not have even conceived yet. So where can you find opportunity?

Meet with new people outside of your field or regular network.
Look for offers from coaches / mentors that have spoken at a meeting you've attended.
Speaker meetings you attend - offer to be the next "expert speaker".
Offer to write for a Realtors newsletter.
Be on the look-out for what the competition isn't doing.
Say yes to a project you think is outside the realm or above the scope of your capabilities!

Being flexible when opportunity does knock is also a crucial factor, don't slam the door just because the event, chance, or offer doesn't come in the package you had visioned. Be open, who knows where the open door may lead!

Yesterday's private group tour of the Haeger Pottery facility proved to be not only educational, but a bargain of a shopping trip also! Since the late 1800's Haeger Pottery has been making beautiful lamps, vases and other items from raw materials found right here in the USA, clay was originally harvested from the bank of the Fox River, now imported for other parts of the United States. SOME SIGHTS OF CHRISTMAS

I always decorate the tree in layers, first the lights if you aren't lucky enough to have a prelit tree. I do each branch inside and then back to the tip. It takes more time than the rest of the entire tree, so don't think you

are doing something wrong if it takes more time than you anticipated. Then I put the garland or the mesh ribbon , it gives the tree depth and really sets the mood, then the biggest ornaments are placed deep inside the tree. Then we start with the medium to smaller ornaments , I oftentimes group three together to fill the space. Then I put the toppers on , that branches that are colored in the trees' theme.

CHRISTMAS IN SCHAUMBURG

Every Christmas at our house , I choose a different color theme. This year it's Red Chartruese and white. I try to keep it at 60-30-10 Then I try to tie it in with the rest of the house. Here 's a few pictures so you can see what I mean.

I love poinsettias and I use a lot of them in many ways to brighten up the room. Hope you and yours have a very merry Christmas.

TWELVE TIPS FOR A TERRIFIC CHRISTMAS TREE

Thanksgiving will herald in the festivities of the Christmas season. It'll be time to start decking the halls and walls with those family favorites that give us the warm & fuzzies this special time of year. Of course, Christmas wouldn't be complete without the centerpiece of holiday traditions... the Christmas tree.

Here are Twelve of my favorite tips to help you to create a stunning tree this Christmas:

1- Use an old sheet with furniture slides under your tree stand to move the tree more easily and help catch any shed needles from both real and artificial trees. (fold over the edges and tuck underneath tree skirt.... then unfold and use for cleanup after Christmas)

2-Both artificial and live trees, require "fluffing" before decorating. Flatten branches on artificial trees to accommodate larger ornaments. Live trees may require a bit of trimming to create these pockets.

3-Bend artificial branch tips slightly upward to support ornaments and to mimic a tree's natural growth pattern.

4-If you still string lights on your tree, consider white lights for "themed" trees. But for depth and visual interest on family-style trees, layer white lights inside the tree while stringing a few colored lights on the outer branches.

5-Consider inserting sturdy willow or similar branches spray-painted white, silver or gold into the tree at regular intervals. Not only will they add movement to the tree but create perfect showcase branches for those "special" collected ornaments.

6-Color themes can serve as a base even for family-style trees. Pick 3 coordinating colors like cream, red and copper and then mix in collectible ornaments after the "filler" ornaments are placed.

7-Decorate the tree starting with lights, then ribbons and garlands, then any floral embellishments ending with ornaments starting with the largest and then adding progressively smaller ones.

8-Tuck larger ornaments back into the tree to create layers of depth. Just as garlands should gently swag between branches, ornaments shouldn't look like they've been poured over the tree only resting on branch tips.

9-Following your color theme, use a variety of ornament shapes, sizes and textures for visual interest. Icicle style ornaments should always be left for outer-most branch tips so they swing freely.

10-While many families nostalgically save the tree topper for last, I suggest placing it first. Especially if the tree is of any size, it will be easier to anchor it in place without worrying about damaging your fully decorated masterpiece.

11-Heirloom toppers can be given even more presence by adding bows, streamers, sparkling picks, branches and other items that protrude from the tree and create a fireworks effect at the top of the tree.

12-After the holidays, disassemble your creation the the same way you assembled it but reversing the steps. And don't forget to recycle cut trees by locating a center near you. Many municipalities have programs to mulch discarded trees or use them for habitat creation.

Chances are that decorating a tree is no mystery to you. Either it is one of your favorite holiday family traditions or its the chore you dread more than long lines at Wal-Mart. Either way, I hope these tips get your creative juices flowing to wow your family this holiday season.

IT'S GHOSTLY OUT THERE!

Ghosts and goblins are fun to make and what a great way to decorate the scary tree from Grandin Road. We used little fake artichokes and some white sheeting material. It was a fun project and since we kept the tree indooors by the window , they will look great next year too!

Halloween is a fun time at our house with 7 grandchildren . Funny, I didn't always decorate for Halloween but then my husband reminded me that the little ones would always remember

Gramma's house and we should build good memories. He was right , they are 15,14,13, 8,5,2,1 and I couldn't let a Halloween go by with the pumpkins or the witches.

I just had to share this fun project with you as it is "Spooktacular!"
If you haven't already tried using some decoupage and the vinyl words from Uppercase Living, you need to give it a whirl!

Supplies:
Unfinished Board from Joann's or any craft store
Glitter (I used black and "glow-in-the dark" white)
Craft Paint
Vintage Ribbon (or any ribbon you have on hand)
Expression from Uppercase Living
Decoupage
Drill
Charms
Needle and thread

Simply paint the board the desired color and let dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat if necessary.
Rub on the expression from Uppercase Living
Apply two coats of Decoupage. While this isn't necessary for the expression to stick, I found if very useful for adhering the glitter.
Sprinkle glitter to your liking on the first coat of wet decoupage.
You can always add more glitter with the second coat as necessary.
When completely dry (a day or two) - drill two holes for the ribbon.
Tie knots in the ribbon through the holes.
Sew two charms on either knot.
Hang accordingly.

The world through the eyes of a decorator and through the eyes of the camera are apparently two different things. At least that's one of the many things the members of the GCDC learned during our seminar today hosted by John Breun of Classic Photography in historic downtown Crystal Lake, IL.

John walked our participants through a question and answer session on how to improve our skills as photographers to better capture what we do and the beautiful transformations we achieve. That said, changes to decorative vignettes and furniture groupings for the purposes of photographing are often necessary to maximize the impact of the transformation.

We were also given tips and tricks for using point & shoot style digital cameras when photographing in different lighting conditions. Guess it's time to drag out that owner's manual and figure out what all those little buttons do. As John jokingly said... the "P" setting on your camera doesn't stand for "professional".

Today's session was followed by a tasty luncheon at nearby Benedict's La Strata restaurant.

Thank you John and Classic Photography for sharing your knowledge and helping us to better show others how we can help them through the gift of interior decorating.

In keeping with the GCDC's September seminar theme of photography, we are happy to announce a fall decorating photo contest.

Since we're sure most of you have or will soon be changing things up in your homes with fall decor, why not take advantage of that to show the world just how talented you are!

We will post any appropriately themed photos and commentary submitted by the due date... up to a maximum of 3 photos per contestant. GCDC member's photos will include name, business name and contact information with the submission. All non-member photos will be identified by submitter's name only.

These photos can be of entryways/doors, tablescapes, fall florals or similar fall-themed vignettes from your home. We reserve the right to edit as necessary and post a.s.a.p. Photos submitted become the property of the GCDC for the purposes of this contest.

Photos must be submitted by Oct. 1st, 2009 and will be posted on here at www.thegcdc.org.

FALL FLORAL FUN

Here in the Chicago area, we're starting to see the first signs of leaves turning. The goldenrod is in full bloom as my allergies are the first to let me know. Thistle and grasses have gone to seed ... a sure sign that snow will be flying before we're ready for it.

And although we've had what I think has been lackluster summer weather this year, September has helped to make up for it with almost picture perfect blue skies, moderate temps and low humidity. When the goldenrod starts blooming and the thistle goes to seed, I get in the mood for fall and probably my favorite time of year for seasonal home decor.

The wonderful thing about fall accents is that they blend very well with any design style. Even more wonderful is that these same fall touches transition easily over the next several months with just a few tweeks for the fall holidays. If you've started with fall leaves, dried grasses, harvested fruits and veggies as a base, it's nothing to add the appropriate accents to embellish them for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

I just finished throwing these fall florals together. As you can see, I like to craft floral arrangements with a certain formality that also look somewhat organic and haphazard. I try to mix colors and textures for visual interest. For inspiration, I imagine walking through an overgrown field this time of year collecting samples from all nature has to offer...then incorporating them into a single arrangement.

I hope these pictures get you in the mood to start your own fall floral fun. By adding seasonal accents, you can get a whole new look for your home without breaking a sweat.

BEDROOM IDEAS FROM A HARDWARE STORE?

Sometimes we find inspiration in the least likely places. I just picked up my latest sample copy of Lowe's home improvement store's magazine Lowe's Creative Ideas for Home and Garden (Sept/Oct 09) and loved their article entitled "Sleeping Beauty".

Almost like the infamous "white room" challenge on HGTV's Design Star, Lowe's offers inexpensive and creative solutions starting with a plain white bedroom and bed and giving it several different personalities and pizazz. Three different makeovers, Traditional, Contemporary and Casual give a whole new look to the space.

I got a kick out of the bamboo flooring headboard idea . Might just have found a use for that leftover box down in the basement after all! And don't miss the article "Vivid Dreams" on page 18 of the same issue with the creative use of over-sized, burgundy colored, ceramic planters and round wooden tops for side tables. Love it!

I'm reminded of these wise words when I think about how much has been accomplished in the relatively short life of the GCDC.

If it weren't for the vision of our founder, Sue Burky, nor the perseverance and determination of our members, GCDC wouldn't exist! Often times, I think when we join an organization, our gut instinct is to think what can the organization do for me? While that's true... the "what" we get out of it is often in direct proportion to the "what" we put into it!

Growth is often difficult...change even moreso. But in order for us (the GCDC) to become the Chicago area's industry leader for decorating professionals, our decorating professional members have to lead the industry!

In difficult times, we all look to cut our losses and protect our core investments. Now is not the time however to forget that there is no "I" in "TEAM" and that our coalition is only as strong as we make it.

The Greater Chicagoland Decorators Coalition is proud to be a sponsor of the Annual Conference of The Society of Decorating Professionals being held the week of October 12th-16th at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, MO. STAGING YOUR PROPERTY...VIRTUALLY

A realtor partner of mine just sent me an article posted on Realtor.org regarding "virtual" staging and she asked my opinion of it.

I guess virtual staging is exactly what it sounds like... staging that takes place electronically through computer assisted design (CAD).

While I know of a few stagers that offer consults by looking at photographs of rooms, I was intrigued by the idea that someone would take those same photos (especially of vacant properties) and electronically enhance them by adding furniture, art and accessories. The re-touched photos are then used to market a warmer, more homey feeling property.

I've taken a look at Before and After photos on one of these virtual stager's websites and I have to say I'm not very impressed. Perhaps the technology just isn't there, but I thought the After photos seemed very artificial, not achieving the desired effect. While perhaps an improvement over photos of empty rooms, I can't imagine that a prospective buyer would be that much more enticed to see a listing after seeing these digitally staged rooms. And what happens when they show up for a tour only to find a vacant listing?

While simple staging advice can certainly be offered by looking at photos, I think the real test of staging's effectiveness is how the space feels when a prospective buyer walks in the door and it FEELS like home.

I'm curious what you think of this technological approach. Have you offered this service to your clients? Did you actually alter photos of a property or simply offer staging advice based on them ? Have you perhaps had your own listing virtually staged?

FLORAL DESIGN TIPS FOR ON-THE-SPOT DECORATING

So I was wondering who thinks arranging flowers is intimidating if not impossible? I admit that I've felt that way before. But I'm actually having quite a lot of fun now that I've taken the time to learn a few of the basics of good floral design. And just like any other decorating discipline, a good eye (...we all have that), patience (...not so much) and the right tools (...duh!) make any job easier.

The Greater Chicagoland Decorators Coalition group recently attended an open house style luncheon and seminar with one of our area's floral wholesalers, Flowers By Design in Carol Stream, IL. Owner Dana Plazyk was nice enough to show us her simple tips for making quick, easy, even on-the-spot arrangements that can work well in both staging and design applications.

I thought I'd paraphrase her expert advice here in hopes it inspires you to pick up and old arrangement or start from scratch to create a new masterpiece for your home or a client's.
Today's faux florals aren't your "grandmother's plastic flowers". Don't be afraid to touch to see the advancements in PVC florals. It's amazing how real they not only look but feel.

Make your arrangement base by hot gluing floral foam block to an inexpensive ceramic tile, shiny side down. Cover the foam with sheet moss or spanish moss attaching with floral pins.

Start from the base and build in layers. Always cut floral stems at an angle for easier insertion into foam remembering to add a small amount of low heat glue to the cut tip to hold it in place when inserted. For the more expensive stems, cutting a little longer than necessary gives you some wiggle room if you need to adjust the length.

Depending on the desired look, take bushes of greenery with broader leaves. Snip off the individual tendrils and "fluff" by bending them into "S" shapes for a more natural appearance. Insert longer pieces around bottom of base leaving shorter pieces to randomly cover the top and sides. Repeat with another "bush" of different, contrasting leaves (different color or texture or both).

Add in twigs or sticks with berries for another texture and dimension. Sparingly use willow or other flowing twigs to add motion and height to the arrangement.

If you like the greens effect, simply make sure all areas of the base are covered and set your arrangement on a bookshelf or cabinets. Simply insert the base into an appropriate container filled with more foam as needed for the sides to cascade and you have a centerpiece.

If you decide to go further, add flower stems in the same fashion. Be careful not to be too symmetrical. Nothing in nature grows perfectly symmetrical. Imagine flowers or vines growing toward the light and you'll get the idea. Mix flower sizes, textures and shapes as you did with the greens to add dimension and visual interest. Generally, larger flowers trending toward the bottom of the arrangement and smaller more whimsical flowers toward the top will help avoid a design that is too "top heavy".

Always remember the "negative" space in your arrangement just as with your interior design projects. Not every area of the arrangement has to be filled. In fact, negative space allows you to see the movement and visual interest in the finished product.

Working on a plastic drop cloth or oversized garbage bag helps with clean up at the end. Simply fold up at the edges and throw away all clippings and mess from your work. Don't skimp on tools.'

A good glue gun, heavy duty snips, floral wire and plastic zip ties are the basic necessities for any floral designer. The plastic zip ties help you bundle elements together in mini bouquet arrangements prior to inserting them into foam or attaching them to another base such as a wreath.

That's about it in a nutshell. With these awesome tips courtesy of Flowers By Design you should be on your way to creating arrangements for all your decorating needs at a fraction of the cost you'd pay in floral boutiques.

Hi, my name is Sue Motto Burky and I am the owner of Redesign EXPRESS…Rooms anew, expressly for you!

One of, the many things, that I love about "my job" is that I get to meet so many wonderful people and help them work through their decorating challenges. I love watching my clients’ faces light up when I create beauty for them that honors their lives and the things that they love!

In 2004, I moved into a 1904 "American Foursquare" home that need serious updating. I worked very closely with an architect to develop the space; gutting and remodeling the first floor and re-furbishing the second. I met with various sub-contractors and enjoyed choosing cabinets, counters, flooring, lighting, appliances, paint colors and more. When the project was finished, I was very sad that the process was over!

Decorating had become a passion that I could not stop thinking about, so I decided to pursue it and became an "Interior Redesigner" in 2005 by enrolling in class at Redesigning Interiors. Shortly after that, Redesign EXPRESS was born and I began working with clients to make their homes everything they desired. In 2006, I became a certified "Professional Home Stager". I added "Interior Decorating Professional" and "Professional Color Expert" to my repertoire after taking courses from One Day Decorating.

As a charter member of Society of Decorating Professionals (or the SDP), I am extremely lucky to have the support of an association that provides continuing education, an annual conference, as well as mentoring opportunities. I was recently honored to be asked by the Board of Directors of the SDP to be one of 12 members on their Development Council helping to make our association the best and provide for other professionals and their clients!

Above all else, the fact that my work has an impact on my clients’ lives on a daily basis is the biggest honor! Where I put chairs will impact how a husband and wife communicate, the game table I select will set the stage for family fun and interaction and the colors that I choose for the walls will impact the emotion of each individual that sits in the space. ADD SOME COLOR FOR A NEW LOOK

Adding Color

Choosing a color palette for your home is important, but where do you start? Here are some expert tips to help you out. Start with the formal rooms These areas include the entry hall, the dining room and the living room. Once you have chosen a palette for those rooms you can pull one color. Take that color and use it, possibly in a different shade or tone, in another room such as your bedroom. Use the color of your clothes as a cue .
People usually buy clothes in the colors that they like and feel they look good in, so use that. Use colors in rooms that look good on you. Not just on the walls but also in furniture and accents. Decorate from dark to light An easy way to make any space look great is to use dark color values close to and on the floor, medium values on the walls, and light values on the ceiling. This mirrors the way the external environment looks. The color wheel Generally, if you want to create a room of relaxation and informality or privacy, related colors work best. These are colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, say yellow and orange. To create a feeling of excitement and formality, great for entertaining, you should use complementary colors. These are colors opposite on the color wheel, such as blue and orange. Dominant, secondary and accent colors Use the 60-30-10 rule. Divide the colors of a space into the components of 60 percent dominant color, 30 percent secondary color and 10 percent accent color. This is a no fail equation. Typically the walls make up the most area, so use the dominant color. Then the upholstery uses the secondary color and the accessories, like throw pillows make up the accent. One last tip, no matter what color scheme you go with, it’s a good idea to put something black in every room. A picture frame, a lampshade, for example. Black helps to anchor all of the other colors in the room.

Well, it's true what they say.... you don't know what you don't know!" Boy, did we learn a lot today.

A dozen members of the GCDC were honored to be hosted by Dana Plazyk and her team at Flowers By Design™ (FBD) in Carol Stream, IL. Wholesale to the trade, FBD offers an array of stunning greenery, florals and accents for use in a variety of decorating applications.

In business for over 20 years, Plazyk shared her talent and expertise with the group by skillfully creating a centerpiece arrangement and topiary using materials available in her showroom. Plazyk offered suggestions, tricks of the trade and helpful techniques that can be immediately applied by our members with their own floral creations.

The group was particularly impressed by the "real touch" florals featured by FBD. As the name implies, not only do they look real...but this particular line also feels incredibly real to the touch. Advancements in PVC technology have dramatically improved the look, feel and detail available in today's faux flowers and greenery. As Dana put it, "These aren't your grandmother's plastic flowers."

This is the final phase of the rooms I have committed to for the Women’s Shelter. The photo’s are showing the entry wall to come in from the stairwell, a little section to the right showing burgundy curtains, a ladder and a plant, then a half wall where you enter the eating area, and lastly the eating area itself where they feed on average 65 people per meal.

This area has not been a very cohesive area in the past. We are looking to place all new tables and chairs in the eating area, the metal on the chairs is rusty and the wood is splintering - that in itself is not a very welcoming place to eat. The wish list will have 5 large round tables seating 8-10 chairs per table.

I am a little perplexed about the area to the right with the burgundy curtain, it is small and unused except for a ladder and plant, and how inviting is that. Give me your thoughts on this area. I was considering this area be a place for posting all the info that is posted all over the entry walls - keep it in one place.

The eating area also needs a place for pictures that those who stay there put up of family and friends - how about some ideas with that as well.

Looking forward to some input on these things as well as some thoughts on a color palette. This is your opportunity to make selections and work those design skills on a project you don’t even have to get your hands dirty on. Thanks for sharing - you are all great designers!!

MORE WOMEN'S SHELTER DECORATING IDEAS

The pictures of the “boys room” may not look like it is such an awful space. The reason we have decided to work on this room is the director of the shelter has such a place in her heart for these boys. Can you imagine being 16 years old and living in a shelter-maybe some of you can. The main problem with the space is lack of color, window treatments - the boys pull the drapes shut to keep the street light out and now the $1 rod is bent-imagine that. They also have no storage at all and no place to hang anything on the walls that they may enjoy.

Looking for color inputs and great storage ideas for their room - get creative for these young guys - let’s show them how to rock!

This summer I will be working on a womens shelter in great need of help. The goal is to make their entry, eating and living space a more cohesive environment. The space houses on average 45-85 women and children. It is a “well loved” space - meaning it needs to be able to stand up to a lot. I would love it if you would share your thoughts on how to make as per design, color and any ideas you can share.

This shelter has been on my heart for some time - we serve hot breakfast for them on Sunday mornings before church. They deserve to be made to feel special and with the helping hands of many we can make that happen for them.

The first portion I will be sharing is the entryway to come into the shelter. Not welcoming for sure. This will need some major paint and a bit of creative design to give it what it needs. GCDC DECORATORS TO MEET IN CAROL STREAM

The GCDC will be hosted by FLOWERS BY DESIGN™ in Carol Stream on May 27th, 2009 from 10:00 - NOON.

Owner Dana Plazyk will be offering a tour of her showroom and warehouse facilities featuring row upon row of beautiful, high-quality silk florals, containers and floral supplies for wholesale to the trade. Plazyk will also be conducting a demonstration of simple floral arranging techniques to the membership.

The group will enjoy refreshments/light lunch afterward.

SPRING A HEADBOARD

Some of my friends call me "Martin Stewart" ala Martha but with the obvious nod to gender. I guess I do get crafty from time to time. I think anyone working in the staging and redesign industry has to be. Even as homeowners, if something is lacking we find ourselves forced to create or approximate it until the real deal can be found or afforded.

One of my favorite "crafty" projects is the creation of a headboard. Mine is more along the line of the illusion of a headboard. I have done it a few times now with great success for some of my staging and redesign clients.

In most cases, like the one pictured here, I've started with a blank wall or at the very least one painted a solid color. Since the bed is almost always the focal point of a well designed bedroom, I use paint to help draw the eye to the bed. I accentuate the bed by painting a "stripe" from ceiling to floor exactly as wide as the bed. A darker tone of the same color usually does the trick. (You could even paint a rectangle slightly above the bed the same width but why tape off more than you have to!). To get a clean, crisp line, I use painters tape and make sure to press down the edges (of the tape) with a flat head screw driver to virtually eliminate bleed.

After the paint is dry and I've removed my tape, I hang artwork above the bed. I leave just enough room for pillows to rest against the wall below the art. You can use a long, horizontal piece or I've also combined two or three identically framed pieces in a row to create the illusion of a headboard. Abstract art or objects could also be used to draw the eye to the faux headboard. Just be careful to secure whatever you use since it is right above the bed.

You're really only limited by your creativity and what's on hand. And that's it... another relatively quick, easy and green way to create the illusion of a headboard when you need one.

While color preferences and psychological responses vary, research has revealed some of the following commonalities, according to The Rohm and Haas Paint Quality Institute and Architects Design Group (also included below is suggestions of what rooms the color may work best in).
Red: Increases energy and heart rate, creates excitement and stimulates the appetite. Best for: Dining rooms
Orange: Adds comfort, warmth, and cheerfulness and too much can bring about feelings of cautiousness. Best for: Living rooms and family rooms
Yellow: Brightens mood and promotes welcoming and joyful feelings; increases positive thinking. Best for: Poorly lit foyers and dark hallways; buttery shades of yellow for living rooms
Green: Most restful color. Reduces nervous system activity and muscular tension, calms and relaxes, offers reminders of nature. Best for: Living rooms (light greens); accent for kitchens and dining rooms (midtones).
Blue: Promotes feelings of calmness, security, tranquility, and cleanliness; lowers blood pressure, cools a room, and serves as an appetite suppressant. Best for: Bedrooms or any restful, peaceful area in a home.
Purple: Boosts creativity, imagination, and meditation, but can have unpleasant subconscious responses. Many adults dislike purple walls, particularly lighter shades of purple that are perceived as more youthful. SCRATCHING YOUR NICHE

As small decorating business owners, we all know about niches. And we're not talking about those cute little tucked-away cut outs in a wall somewhere. Those really are awesome! What a great place for a punch of visual excitement... maybe small statuary or your favorite floral creations..... but I digress!

As small business entrepreneurs, we think of our "niche" in terms of how we distinguish ourselves from our competitors. What can we offer or do better, cheaper, faster than others in our business? Is there an area of need that isn't being filled? If so, how do we do it?

An article in the April 09 issue of Costco Connection lifestyle magazine by Paul and Sarah Edwards called "Scratching that niche" caught my eye because it elaborated on just this concept.... about how it's better to have a special niche than to be a "jack-of-all-trades".

Whatever your focus, from event/holiday decorating, to window treatment, color/painting, staging, redesign, senior move management or any other niche, I truly believe you're more valuable to your client if you specialize in one or two areas while offering referrals for those things that aren't necessarily areas you're skilled in or passionate about. The most successful decorators I know are those that have discovered their niche and know exactly how to "scratch" it!

I've done this over the last few years with my own company with a great deal of success. I've found that by focusing my business on 3 key areas, clients actually seem to respect me more than when I tried to do it all. And my business has grown as a result. In the meantime, I've developed quality resources for my clients to "one stop shop" me for other services they may need. Good business partners are never a bad thing to have in your decorating toolbox.
